This Broadband Isn’t for Watching Netflix

Phototherapy Grand Rapids MIIf you’re reading our Elite Plastic Surgery blog, you’re probably well versed in the aesthetic world. But you may not have heard about BroadBand Light, or BBL. BroadBand Light is an innovative technology that can address various skin conditions associated with aging, outdoor lifestyles, and general sun damage. We can tailor your BBL treatment to match your unique skin type and the things you specifically want to address. BBL can be used on any area of the body.

How BBL works

The broad wavelengths of light delivered in a BBL session will gently heat the upper layers of your skin. Once the body senses the heat under the skin, it initiates a healing response, which is to produce new collagen in the area to “heal” the perceived injury (even though there isn’t one). Since collagen provides the skin’s underlying structure, new collagen helps firm and rejuvenate the skin. Also, the photothermal energy has a second effect — it eliminates the fine blood vessels that cause redness and also reduces the excess melanin that causes pigmented lesions.

What skin conditions can be improved with BBL?

  • Pigmented lesions (age spots, freckles, etc.)
  • Vascular lesions (small blood vessels, spider veins)
  • Acne
  • Skin laxity
  • Uneven skin texture
  • Unwanted hair

What’s involved in a BBL treatment?

At Elite our BBL sessions generally take 30 minutes or less, depending on the size of the area we are treating. We first give you protective eyewear. Then we deliver the BBL energy. You’ll feel a warm sensation and something like the feeling of a small rubber band being plucked against the skin. That is the BBL energy being applied.

Our patients find this to be a gentle, easy-to-take treatment. The majority of patients don’t feel the need for topical numbing in the treatment area, but if you desire we can provide that.

Afterwards

Your skin will look like it is slightly sunburned for a few hours after your session. Pigmented lesions will darken for a few days. This is a sign that they have absorbed the energy and will subsequently flake off and fade. You don’t need any downtime or recovery, but you will need to be diligent about protecting your skin from the sun, as it will be more sensitive to UV light for a few weeks.
